about

This is a Christmas song, about the place I lived when my son was born. (I really love Psychogeography and how places have hidden meanings to look up).

References:

Barking has an unusual soft play area, which is all black and white and shaped like a robot idol which you can climb inside. It's worth looking up. The artist was inspired by a nearby wooden idol, which is one of the oldest known works of art.

Christina's is a very good steak restaurant, which has an amusing sign.

Batman was indeed co-designed by Leonardo DaVinci! Bob Kane was inspired by the bat-like wings of his "orthopter" flying machine. It reminded me of the robot idol's creator (who also collaborated with an artist who was long dead).

Re. The religious references: I'm an atheist in the traditional sense, but increasingly believe god just means, "the universe", and so we all are god. (What we do makes heaven and hell, right here, right now).

Bonus fact: This song was made from the outtakes of a song called Scamper. It was originally a prog epic, but the band I wrote it for quite rightly told me it was too complex and getting in the way of the catchiest bit. The catchy bit became Scamper and these out-takes became a more spiritual tune.

lyrics

Climbing the idol
Kids love the gothic look too
Dagenham Ideal
Like Lion O of Staedel
Collaboration across the thousand long years
Climb into her brain and sit up in between her ears

Oh sacred goddess, we are all your sons

Christmas is coming
And Barking now home
Kids see raw meaning not models
Would you turn a corner?
Do you like good steaks?
That's why you'd go visit Christina's

All places soak up the ghosts of their past
And future signs drawing us forward
Kids get death early
Collaboration goes on
DaVinci co-designed Batman
All things around us are God
