about

I always have lots of potential song titles on file (as choosing odd or evocative ones is possibly my favourite thing about song writing). It occurred to me that an easy way to use them all up would be to write lots of short instrumentals - I could then utilise my backlog of title ideas by picking the ones that best suited them. It would also be a fun experiment to write short jingles.

Spag Bol obviously means Spaghetti Bolognase. (It’s just a British abbreviation that has always struck me as funny and a bit, “Abbigails Party.”) The sample of bells was recorded outside Westminster Abbey, as I walked along with my iPod. I was delighted to also get a recording of a business woman’s voice, as she said something genuinely charming.

The guitar parts use a jazz chord that I really like, but hadn’t used for a few years. I’m not sure why! I think that you sometimes forget things that you know how to do. I also used a octave pedal, which makes your guitar sound an octave deeper and a bit like a fuzzy keyboard. As soon as I played this little tune, I knew that it fitted the tile Spag Bol. So, there you go!
